Paint Decorated "Buttocks" Style Basket

Circa 1870-1910: This American antique buttocks basket from the late 19th century has great form, wonderful patina and lively green and red paint decoration. Small handmade nails, showing perfect age.  10" diameter at basket rim, 13" diameter at bottom; 6 1/2" tall from bottom to rim and 13" tall to top of fixed handle.

Early Taghkanic Friendship Basket

Late 19th century Taghkanic (NY, "Bushwacker") Friendship basket.  Round at rim, square at bottom.  Circa 1880.  6" tall to top of handle;  7" diameter at rim.


Early Nantucket Basket

Extended fixed-handle, very early Nantucket basket (pre-1900), made by sailors/lightkeepers off the coast of Nantucket.  The nails are oxidized with time and the hardwoods of staves, handle, rim and bottom display the patina of age.  Simple "bread-loaf" shape ensures diversified utility for Nantucket and Cape Cod daily life.  Very fine condition with only a few minor rattan repairs.  A great piece of American history and folk art rarely found today.  8 1/2" long, 4" wide.

Green Taconic (Taghkanic) Basket

Original "Bushwacker" baskets were constructed from ash trees in the hills about 75miles north of New YorkCity, during the first quarter of the 20th century. Each Taghkanic basket is constructed in an identical form, sturdy - and a beauty.  Size: 12" diameter, 7" tall.  Swing handle.  Painted an attractive green sometime later in its life.  Very nice condition.
